Ray Rael Yau | Photographer + Video Director



Ray (Rael) Yau is a Chinese-American portrait, lifestyle, and celebrity photographer + video director. Born and raised in the Lower East Side of New York City, Ray started out as a graffiti artist turned stock broker turned club DJ and eventually transitioned in photography and videos.

Ray has dedicated over 15 years into the art + music + film + tv culture and is educated with an Associates degree in Graphic Design from International Fine Arts College (2000) and a Bachelors degree in Film / Communications from University of Miami (2004).

Ray trained under Playboy photographer Jarmo Pohjaniemi for over 10 years and was heavily influenced by artists like Jonathan Mannnion, Anthony Mandler, and Patrick Hoelck to pursue a life and career in photography.

Over the last 10 years, Ray has photographed some notable artists in the music, film, and entertainment industry. Subjects include Jay-Z, Kanye West, Drake, Miley Cyrus, Fabolous, Ludacris, Cara Delevigne, Lindsey Wixon, Emma Stone, Marc Jacobs, Russell Simmons, President Bill Clinton, and many others. Ray's been published in Billboard, Complex, Hamptons, Respect, The Source, and Vibe and his videos have aired nationally on Current TV, FOX, MTV, MTV Korea, NBC, Playboy, Spin, The Onion, and W Hotels.

When Ray's not shooting portraits or directing videos, he's giving back to the community teaching photography, video, and design to underprivileged high school students in the Harlem community and supporting various non-profit organizations which include: Hollywood Unites for Haiti, Harlem Children's Zone and Camp Kayak.

Ray's fun, relaxed and laid back approach to photography and life has created a body of work which is honest and simple, yet raw with a definitive street edge.
